Module 1 Introduction: (CU2 M1) Plate Tectonics

Plate tectonics is what is known as a unifying theory in geology and its application can be used to explain many different phenomena, including earthquakes, formation of volcanoes, location of mountain ranges, and even the placement of many fossils. The understanding of of plate tectonics can help one gain knowledge of the dynamic processes that are seen on the surface of the Earth and effect many different human populations worldwide. In this Module you will learn about the processes related to plate tectonics, the various geologic phenomena created by plate tectonics, and how to use this information to help predict the possibility of future geologic hazards.

Module Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate ability to identify major plate boundaries based on the location of geologic phenomena like volcanoes, earthquakes, and mountains.

  • Understand the basic concepts of plate movement and how it related to the different types of crust.

  • Understand the importance of plate boundaries in terms of its effects on humans.
