Read this introductory material for Chapter 7. This will provide you with a working definition of a tort and allow you to distinguish torts from contracts. Note the overlap between these two categories as well as the overlap of torts and criminal law. You will see from this introduction that torts are another way in which American society enforces certain basic societal norms.
