Module 1 Introduction: (U2 M1) Membrane Transport and Signaling

In the first Module of Credit Unit 2, you will explore the variety of ways the cell membrane controls what moves in and out of the cell. In Modules 2 and 3 of Credit Unit 1, you got a brief look at the cell membrane, examining the molecules that make up the cell membrane. The cell membrane can easily be considered the most important component of the cell, and as such, this Module builds upon the basics presented already in this course. There is a heavy emphasis on the Labs associated with this topic, and as such, you will have to do a bit of time budgeting to complete the Module in a timely fashion.

Module Outcomes:

  • Describe how biological molecules shape the structure and function of cells and organisms (gas exchange, recognition, movement, etc.).

  • Describe how the properties of cells (organelles, membrane permeability) relate to larger-scale biological phenomena (gas exchange, nutrition, movement, etc.). (How can a cell control what gets in and out?)

  • Perform the appropriate experiment(s) to analyze biological materials.
