Course Description:        

Organization and jurisdiction of local, state and federal law enforcement, judicial and corrections systems, terminology and constitutional limitations of the system.

 

Course Goals/Objectives:   

To provide students with the necessary skills to prepare them for understanding the contemporary environment of criminal justice systems in the United States.  Providing a basic understanding and knowledge of what crime is, and how our justice system deals with these issues.

Course Competencies:      

Students will demonstrate by their scores on written assignments, exams, and discussion, mastery of the basic skills necessary to perform the following:

  1. Basic problem solving techniques
  2. Instruction interpretation
  3. Understanding criminal justice vocabulary and terms
  4. Explain the structure of the American criminal justice systems
  5. Describe how each criminal justice system is financed for growth and development
  6. Describe the management and organizational structure of the CJ system
  7. Describe what impact the juvenile justice system has had on the American public

Material to be graded:        

Quizzes, total of 9 for point value, 1 for pass/fail value. 500 points total + 1 pass fail.

Current Event / New article discussion,  total value @ 100 points, minimum of 10 points each.

Research papers / Opinion papers, total of 4; 200 points total

Civilian Ride a Long with Law Enforcement or Courtroom Attendance. 100 pts. 

 Written final exam, available on a date TBD during finals week.  100 points Final Exam

Attendance:                     

 Students are required to log in the 1st week of class to prevent being dropped for no show.  Also required is completion of the assessment quiz which closes at 5 pm on Friday of the 1st week of class. 

Students are expected to attend and participate in class; attendance / participation are paramount to academic success.    If for any reason you are unable to participate with class, please notify me as soon as possible via [Instructor's LMS] e-mail. 

 

FINAL EXAM  

Part I

There will be a written final exam, available on a date TBD during finals week.  100 pts 

Part II 

Civilian Ride a Long with Law Enforcement or Courtroom Attendance. 100 pts. 

Due date is [Your due date here].

You are responsible for scheduling with the law enforcement agency of your choice, local – county- state or federal, a ride along for a minimum of 4 hours.  The other option is to research with either [a local] Justice [or equivalent] Court or [a local] County Superior [or equivalent] Court, adult or juvenile and attend a hearing or trial for a minimum of 4 hours.  Upon completing so, write a 1500 word minimum paper on your experience.   This is a key part of your grade.                 

Do not wait till the last minute to complete.

 

Reflection Paper / Course Assessment

A reflection paper is due to me. It needs to be limited to two pages and is required.  This is for my ongoing assessment of the web class and your opinion counts.  I value your opinion as the student.
