Practical Nursing 1

Introduction

This unit of study will introduce you to the nursing responsibilities for before and after surgery.  You will learn how to assess and prepare your patients for surgery and to prioritize care for your post- operative patients.  Patient teaching both before surgery and on discharge are an important part of the nurse’s role in caring for the operative patient.

Objectives

Upon completion of this module, the student will be able to:

• Assist with pre-operative and post-operative teaching
• Perform a surgical prep
• Prepare patient for operating room
• Prepare patient’s medical records for operating room
• Provide post-operative care
• Assist with post-operative discharge teaching
