Lab: (U1 M2) Tabletop Lab- Properties of Water
This is your chance to perform some hands-on science! In a series of simple experiments, you will investigate the unique properties of water that are related to the polar nature of the water molecule. Watch how water and oil interact together, and determine the polarity of molecules added to a mixture of oil and water. Apply what you know about the nature of non-polar molecules and the structure of unsaturated fats to find explanations to your observations. You will need one document to complete the Lab:

It is recommended that you print out the above Lab (link) and record your data and answer the analysis questions by hand as you complete the Lab. This Lab is not to be turned in or graded.
This Lab requires several "at home" supplies. Be sure to have these on hand when you are ready to start:

Two pennies or other coins

One medicine dropper, preferably that makes small drops (has a narrow opening at the tip).

Two large drinking glasses (pint size or larger). A large jar or glass measuring cup would also work, as long as the container is large enough to hold 16 ounces of liquid, is see through, and is taller than it is wide.

Dish soap, you will need only one or two drops.

Approximately 1 ½ cups of cooking oil, canola or other type of vegetable oil will do, whatever you have on hand.

Food coloring

A willing volunteer to help with one of the experiments.
