Module 2 Introduction: (U4 M2) Evolution by Natural Selection

This Module focuses on the underlying principles of evolution. You will explore the development of the theory of evolution throughout history, examine the evidence that supports the theory, and we will dispel some common misconceptions about exactly what evolution is and is not.

Module Outcomes:

  • Describe the criteria by which organisms are classified into different species, reproductive barriers that separate species, and the processes that are thought to lead to the formation of a new species.

  • Describe evidence that supports an evolutionary view.

  • Describe the theory of evolution in terms of variation and natural selection within populations, the circumstances under which evolution occurs, and how evolution explains biological diversity and adaptation. (Why does a beaver have a flat tail and webbed feet?)
