Introduction to Machines: Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Distinguish among and explain the operation of simple machines: lever, wheel and axle, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, and screw.
  • Use the concept of mechanical advantage to calculate mechanical advantage and its tradeoffs.
  • Recognize the frequent everyday presence of rotary-to-linear conversion and use some of its terminology. 
  • Work with different kinds of cams and as you change settings, record data and observe the effects of those changes.
  • Work with a four-bar mechanism, observing how different settings affect functionality.
